If existing commercial and industrial petroleum Underground
Storage Tanks (except heating oil USTs) are to be kept in
use, they must meet the Virginia Department of Environmental
Quality (VDEQ) requirements for corrosion resistance, spill/overfill
protection, and leak detection. Our company does not perform
upgrade work.
If the existing tanks have been out of use for more than
one year, they are required to be permanently closed by removal
or by filling with an inert solid. Our company is thoroughly
trained and experienced to do this work safely, and properly
and we provide you with the documentation to prove that it
was done properly.
A release/leak inspection is typically performed at the time
of UST closure/removal, and if a release is detected it is
required to be reported to the VDEQ within 24 hours. If the
VDEQ requires cleanup work, then we pursue access to the Virginia
Petroleum Storage Tank Fund (VPSTF) through a pre-approval
process at the VDEQ. We perform the required cleanup work
per VDEQ specifications. You pay the financial responsibility
and any identified non-reimbursable costs and we pursue the
reimbursable costs through the VPSTF—you do not have
to wait for reimbursment.
It is extremely important to perform the work properly using
safe construction methods and diligent science, and to ensure
that the proper documentation is in place. This documentation
will be thoroughly evaluated by prospective buyers, lenders,
and insurance underwriters. If a release exists, it is best
to identify it and properly address it utilizing the currently
available state funding (VPSTF), rather than risk future non-reimbursable
required cleanup and/or third party lawsuits. Our scientists
and engineers will ensure that the work is done properly...the
first time.
